The short explanation of this alert was:

North Carolina’s beautiful land is being bulldozed and developed at the alarming rate of 100,000 acres each year - an area roughly the size of the City of Durham! High tax bills can be a major factor in a landowner’s decision to sell their land.  Under current law, landowners who want to conserve their land for wildlife value or open space are penalized because they do not get the same property tax break that those who farm or harvest timber for commercial purposes.

We need equitable tax law to help landowners who want to conserve their land.  H1889, Present-Use Value System Modifications (sponsored by Harrison, Gibson, Hill and Brubaker) would help landowners by giving them the same lower tax rate and help them protect their land from development.

The bill passed the state House by an overwhelming majority (93-22), and it is expected to be heard in the state Senate very soon. Please send the letter below and urge your Senator to support H1889!
