The short explanation of this alert was:

The National Park Service is preparing to blast through the most rugged, wild landscape of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to build a highway that serves no transportation need. This “Road to Nowhere,” on the North Carolina side of the park, would cost U.S. taxpayers more than $600 million, and forever scar America’s favorite national park.

Now is the time to join your fellow citizens in Western North Carolina, and across the country, who are working to stop the road.  Use the space below to voice your concerns to the National Park Service now!

The park service began building the Swain County road in the late 1950s, but after completing just seven miles, abandoned the project due to the tremendous cost and the severe impacts to the environment.

Today, the proposed North Shore Road is not needed, and is not wanted. Many local citizens have advocated for a monetary settlement paid to Swain County instead of a road. The amount put forth is $52 million, the cost of the original road adjusted for inflation, which is about one-tenth the cost of building the road.

NOTE: The federal administration is increasingly disfavoring mass emails and postcards as official comments. While this practice is not condoned, it is increasingly important for citizens to voice their concerns in their own words.  In the message area below please take an extra minute to write your own comment afterwards.
