The short explanation of this alert was:

Raleigh Public Works is responsible for the biggest incidence of groundwater pollution ever recorded in the state, created through improper dumping of sewage sludge from 1986 through the late 1990s. If not cleaned up, the pollution will continue to leach massive amounts of nitrogen pollution into the Neuse for the next 30 – 40 years.

The city should have two options: clean up the pollution (expensive); or making up for it by restoring wetlands to remove pollution elsewhere along the river (not quite as expensive).  Instead, the city is pursuing a third option: do nothing.  The city has asked the state Environmental Management Commission (EMC) for a variance to let the pollution clean itself up (by leaking into the river). The EMC is taking comments on this variance request through November 5.

Sign the letter below to state regulators and Raleigh’s City Council. Add your own comments and tell them that Raleigh should take responsibility for polluting the Neuse River.
