The short explanation of this alert was:

Grocery manufacturers are trying to change the USDA's rules so that some of their non-organic ingredients can be exempted from organic standards. If they succeed, this would allow them to capitalize on the growing organic market using non-organic ingredients. The proposed amendment to the rules would add 38 substances to the National List of Allowed Substances. This would give large grocery manufacturers a distinct advantage over organic farmers, as well as other producers who have sought out organic ingredients and built a viable industry, such as Pisgah Brewery in Black Mountain NC. Pisgah's certified organic beers are made with certified organic hops—a practice that might become meaningless if this rule change is approved.
