Take Action Today: Tell NC to Get Serious About Mercury Pollution
Mercury pollution is a serious problem in North Carolina. Now is the time for NC to stop mercury emissions at the number one source: our coal-fired power plants. Starting May 1st, the state wants to know what North Carolinians think about the state's Environmental Management Commission's proposal for no new mercury reductions (beyond the 65% in current rules) until 2013, with uncertain reductions after that.
How bad is NC's mercury problem?
The solution is within reach: 90% reductions by 2010 for all coal plants.
- Current rules proposed by NC will cut plant emissions roughly 65% by 2013; that’s not enough.
- Controls are available to cut over 90% of mercury emissions by 2010.
- If borne entirely by the utilities, a 90% cut would cost less than 2 percent of their annual profits.
