The short explanation of this alert was:
If passed, House Bill 643 would allow treated sewage to be dumped into North Carolina's aquifers, overturning a longstanding law protecting vital drinking-water sources and potentially posing a significant health risk to the millions of North Carolinians who depend on clean groundwater for use in their homes and businesses. House Bill H643 would allow operators of sewer systems to apply for permits to inject treated sewage – artfully called “reclaimed water” in the bill – into aquifers for temporary storage.
(The bill is being pushed by the Onslow Water and Sewer Authority, which wants to expand treatment capacity but does not want to pay for additional land for sprayfield irrigation, a conventional way to disposed of treated wastewater.) Use the form below to send a message to your state representative telling him/her that you don’t want treated sewage in your drinking water.
Tell me more.
