The short explanation of this alert was:
URGENT UPDATE: A bill to halt protections for North Carolina's coastal waters has just been introduced. Even if you have already taken action, please send another message today!
As a result of ineffective state rules, we've witnessed the increased pollution of our coastal waters, including a rise in closures of our shellfish waters.
The main source of contamination is polluted stormwater, which carries bacteria and assorted chemicals to our rivers and sounds and is the primary cause of 90 percent of all contaminated shellfish beds. Once our coastal waters are impaired, it's very difficult and extremely expensive to restore them.
After more that 20 years of failure, it's time to fix the state’s Coastal Stormwater Program and fully protect our coastal waters. The rules that have been in place since 1985 to control stormwater in the 20 coastal counties have failed to protect the quality of our water. Thankfully, the Environmental Management Commission (EMC) has approved new science-based rules that will insure that new development in the coastal region will not pollute our shellfish and swimming waters.

We need your help to save our coastal waters while we still can! Development interests are trying to delay and kill the rules. Write and send an email below to tell your legislators to protect North Carolina's coastal waters.
