The short explanation of this alert was:

In the midst of a global climate change crisis, Duke Energy is moving forward with its plans to create one of the nation’s largest coal burning plants by expanding their Cliffside plant (60 miles west of Charlotte.)  2008 is an election year for North Carolina's next Governor and sadly, no candidate running for our state's top office has spoken out against Duke's plan.

We need citizens from across the state to tell North Carolina's candidates for Governor to speak out against this ill-conceived plan for more coal. The emissions from coal plants are a leading source of global warming and mercury poisoned fish. This power plant would also be a huge water hog during a time of severe drought in the Southeastern U.S. (this coal unit would double the power plant’s daily water consumption to 20 million gallons of water).

Send the candidates a quick message using the form below and please add your own comments on this important issue. It's always helpful to mention that you are a voter!
