The short explanation of this alert was:

The NC Environmental Management Commission (EMC) has proposed rules to clean up Jordan Lake by improved wastewater treatment upstream, and controlling polluted runoff from new and existing development. As a side benefit, the rules will also help fix water quality problems in creeks upstream from the lake. Please take a moment to urge the EMC to adopt strong rules to clean up Jordan Lake by writing a letter below.

What Should My Letter Say?

* Your letter will be most effective if it is brief and explains why water quality in Jordan Lake or upstream rivers and creeks matters to you. For example, because you fish, swim, drink the water, or care about the watershed’s attractiveness to new employers.

* Please urge the EMC to act now and avoid further delay in cleaning up the lake.

* Also urge the EMC to strengthen the proposed rules in two ways:

    • The proposed rules won’t require wastewater plants to reduce nitrogen pollution until 2016, almost a decade away. An earlier version of the proposed rules set that date at 2011, which we think is fair and achievable. We are urging the EMC to require wastewater plant upgrades by 2011.
    • The proposed rules are very vague about what local governments must do to control pollution from existing development. The science is clear that Jordan Lake cannot become healthy again unless we tackle this source of pollution. We are urging the EMC to be specific about what local governments must do to begin controlling runoff from existing development.
