The short explanation of this alert was:

Bayer CropScience, based in Research Triangle Park, NC, recently acquired the company that distributes lindane agricultural products in North America. Lindane is an old, dangerous neurotoxic pesticide – it sticks around in people's bodies and builds up in the environment.  Lindane can cause seizures and damage to the nervous system, and can weaken the immune system.

In an average year, 142,000 pounds of lindane are used agriculturally in the U.S. for seed treatment. Lindane is also used to control headlice and scabies in the U.S. and Canada. However, we don't need lindane-safer alternatives are available!

Banned in at least 52 countries and severely restricted in more than 33 others. Bayer CropScience Canada has already banned seed treatment with lindane, and in early 2005, Bayer announced that it will withdraw registration of lindane seed treatment products in Mexico. But the U.S. continues seed treatment uses of lindane for corn, wheat and a handful of other grains.

Act now and tell Bayer executives the U.S. must join Canada, Mexico and the rest of the world and stop using this dangerous pesticide!
