Twenty-two species of fish in the eastern half of our state have such high levels of mercury that they are unsafe for children and childbearing women to eat. Pre-birth and childhood exposure to mercury has been linked to lowered intelligence, learning disabilities, and vision and hearing problems. The NC Department of Enviroment and Natural Resources (NCDENR), Division of Air Quality is holding an important public hearing on serious mercury pollution problem in NC. I hope you will plan to join me in attending and asking for a 90% reduction in mercury emissions from North Carolinas power plants and preserve our states tradition of protecting public health.
